Getting into using a citizen band radio is a lot of fun but having the right antenna is a must to have to get the best communication through for you. You do not want a lot of static when you are trying to talk to someone. Here are a few tips to remember:

  • Top loaded are the best
  • You want to make sure at least two thirds of the antenna is above your car
  • Taller antennas are much better than shorter ones
  • If you have a fiberglass car or boat then you have to get a no-ground plane antennas system
  • Make sure your bandwidth will meet the need of at least a 40 band radio if not more

There are two basic designs for the citizen band antennas. The top loaded and the base loaded. You see many antennas on top of vehicles and some of them have the whip antennas. These are very long and they usually have it held back with some type of mount so it does not hit on low things such as a drive through or bridge overheads and such. You can decide which you prefer to have.
